"I agree this sucks, and I'm the mod"
(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 12:27 am (UTC)(link)I run a community that's changed a lot in personality. I've had some issues with it, but I don't want to dictate how people post unless they're explicitly breaking rules. However, recently someone mentioned having the same concerns I did.
Is there a discreet way to tell a member you agree without being catty? I thought about PMing them in private, but I wasn't sure if that would open a can of worms, especially if they ended up telling others, "even the mod agrees this place sucks now." Not that I really think she would, but you have to be careful. So I don't know.
Re: "I agree this sucks, and I'm the mod"
(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 12:38 am (UTC)(link)OTOH, as the mod you can still offer guidance to the community as a whole. From your post I'm guessing the issue is with the types/topics of discussion that are going on within the comm? If so, there's nothing wrong with you using your modly authority to gently remind people that "this comm is meant to be a place of tolerance/fun/whatever, so those of you intent on using it for other purposes please realize you're making people uncomfortable/turning them off the comm so tone it down" etc.
Basically, either deal with it AS a mod, or don't say anything.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 01:10 am (UTC)(link)What I would do is, first, PM the user, not to say that you agree with them, but to ask if there's any concrete suggestions that you can take. Then I would start a thread or post or whatever so that people can talk about the comm and see where people are at. Obviously that's something you're going to have to ride herd on to keep from getting out of hand, but don't punish people for disagreeing with you. Just try to keep the conversation focused on concrete actions you can take, rather than just petty grievances.
And then listen and try to put things into practice.
And also, I want to say that I think there are things you can do to moderate the comm without dictating how people post. Something like a PM saying "Hey, stop being a dick in that one post" or something can be pretty effective.
