when a character entered a secret "game mode" (that spawned from an easter egg in one of the flash animations that spawned from a joke from one of the artists that contributed), she said she felt "so caucasian" and a graphic showing different skin tones appeared

some tumblr backlash after, hussie apologized and changed "caucasian" to "peachy" and the skin tones to fruit colors (grapes, cherries, lemons, etc.)

earlier than that, one of the characters who fancies himself a cool dj rapper had a chat with his friend, who said something about his "white brother"

hussie tried to say that the characters (who are drawn mostly in black and white, with only their clothes having a little color) could be any race fans wanted them to be, so when people pointed to that chat combo, he edited the word "white" to look like a jumbled, glitchy mess

more tumblr backlash later, he changed it back to what it said originally

uh, um, I think that's all I can remember regarding that?

tl;dr version: Hussie made the mistake of supporting POC headcanons for his ambiguously white characters, but in SJW land when something's not perfect, it's the devil.

Eh. It was more "Hussie made a bunch of white characters, then retconned them into 'ambiguous' without actually changing anything, to try to avoid critique." It was a lazy "fix", which is why people sort of rolled their eyes about it.

Yeah. I don't think it's a major crime or anything -- he just doesn't always get far enough out of his own head to realize he's still writing things from a perspective where white = default generic. He's still usually pretty good about trying to take in other perspectives and identities, even if he doesn't always succeed, and he's done some good things with, for instance, Dirk and Kanaya. All in all, I'd say he gets a good grade with maybe some room for improvement -- as, honestly, most people do.
