Ron isn't as interested in learning as Hermione, but he's clearly not a complete idiot. There are times when he's more focused than she is, and he probably has a better head for strategy than the others if he's so good at chess.

I wish Rowling had done more with his aptitude for chess after the first book. It went from one of his strengths to something that was mentioned briefly when the trio needed to be shown passing time occasionally.

Yeah. I'm disappointed he didn't take a more active role in planning things when they were searching out the horcruxes. I feel like Hermione was conveniently the default brain in all things.

Yeah, IIRC the seventh movie actually had him planning things, which was one of the few things the movies did differently with Ron that I actually liked.

Rowling was probably all too aware of the whole "smart people play chess" meme, and wanted to avoid that. She didn't want people claiming he was smart simply by dint of playing chess at a 9th grade level in front of 8th graders. She wanted people to judge his intelligence by the way he acted. Like a medical moron.

This. Harry too. Both Harry and Ron are not idiots. They are just lazy when it comes to school and also don't care about learning the way Hermione does.

Very true. Although, Harry and Ron were definitely on the lazy side. I mean, Harry even after he knew the prophecy and knew what was at stake didn't seem to focus on learning what he had to at all. Sometimes I really wanted to smack the two of them. And I imagine a world where Hermione wasn't Harry's friend and in that world he ends up dead very quickly.
