I find the Doctor Who fandom fairly frightening and unfriendly wherever I am and why I will never, ever, ever join it and refuse to become more than a casual watcher of the show.

I do feel bad about lumping all Doctor Who fans together because that's not fair, but as a group, it seriously scares me.

I have some really great DW fan friends who I've found online. We're not part of any community, we just found one another. I hope you can find some good DW friends too.

This makes me sad. And maybe you haven't found the right group. I cling to my handful of fandom friends tightly. It's a safe place to disagree on everything. And to not be made to feel bad if you have preferences. I can, for example, freely talk about how crappy I think the show is now and am met with curiosity instead of animosity. And my curiosity is met with legit explanations. But we grew out of LJ and maybe that has a lot to do with it.
