devil's advocate: are there nuns who don't wear habits? I legitimately have never seen or heard of one (especially if all her sisters are wearing one), so that sounds like religious and societal pressure to me...

13 years of Catholic school here, and yeah, there are nuns who don't wear habits. Usually they wear pretty simple clothing regardless, but not always habits.

Habits are kind of pain to launder, so it's increasingly rare that nuns wear them, at least every day. Especially nuns in service orders rather than contemplative ones, who are the ones most people interact with anyway.
