Oh my god, some of the responses you've gotten to this are incredible. People just refuse to believe that they are ever influenced by the media. And they think that anyone who is influenced just isn't trying hard enough or had bad parents. This shit is pervasive! Why do people act like it's a non-issue?

i know, right?

seriously, how can some people be so thick.

it IS an issue, and it does affect people. "lol just filter the images your kids watch" - like PLEASE this is the internet, when has that ever worked

people don't exist in a media-less bubble and to pretend media has zero influence at all is just being deliberately obtuse

People don't like the idea that they aren't in complete control of themselves 100% of the time.

this is true. I'm guilty of it myself.

People don't like the idea that they are helpless pawns of "the media" and "society."

Prepare for word vomit. I don't even know what I'm doing...

Outsider perspective looking in here.

I think it's because mass media influences each and every one of us in so many different ways that it becomes really hard to tell whether or not were we actually influenced by the media or by our life experiences.

We all have our separate lives and we all have our own experiences growing up. Our parents, our friends, our neighborhood, country, faith... all of these factors play a part in our childhood and youth. Add media into the mix and it becomes confusing and complicating: just where does your true self end and where your media-influenced parts begin?

Some people can see the boundaries, but some don't. We all love to talk about movies and fanfics and games and all, but we don't talk in-depth about religion or politics or our body since 1) it makes us uncomfortable/defensive and 2) it is going against the main point of this comm (barring the General Comments). Add misinformation and hundreds of thousands of people adding their opinion and suddenly it's not surprising to see some ditching the issue entirely and calling it a non-issue.

and yes, I know. I'm putting in my two cents here, sue me.

Also, I think there's a bit of... I won't say elitism but... something-ism in the issue. We like to think that we are "above" those who are influenced by the media like the pro-anorexics. We like to think that we don't follow blindly what we see, but we admit to buying stuff or being attracted to someone/thing just by reading or listening or just outright looking at them from movies and magazines. Isn't that being influenced by the media already? Of course, then we would try to make up excuses for it.

We are all different. We are all influenced. Saying we aren't is just outright bullshit. Whether or not it's by the media or something otherwise, and how much... that's the question.

wow, that ended up being longer than I thought
