(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)The scene showed that she is brave and competent in her job and the fact that she'd risk her life for her team like that says a lot about her as an officer and woman.
I hate it when people say that a scene accomplishes nothing just because a character doesn't win. This is the kind if mindset I expect from someone who is playing a videogame, not someone who is watching a movie.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)But why send Uhura? Who sends the COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER to help take a fugitive into custody? And the films never establish that she has any kind of security training. Why not send, oh, I don't know, a SECURITY OFFICER?
And even her emotional connection to Spock never amounts to anything in that scene (when it easily could have) considering he ignores every word out of her mouth until she says "save Kirk" -- at which point he finally looks up and stops beating the shit out of Khan.
And...sure, the scene with the Klingons showed she was brave. BUT...it actively gave Admiral Marcus points in his argument. THE KLINGONS DIDN'T LISTEN TO HER. Instead they tried to murder everyone. And while that's not Uhura's fault, it DOES mean that her big scene ends up reinforcing the idea that you can't reason with the Klingons and have to take military action against them. Which fucking blows since this is a Star Trek film. And yet diplomacy once again is shown to be ineffectual when compared to a gun to the face.
Add the shit editing on top of that and all we get out of the scene is that:
1. Uhura's brave (and even then, if the other option is certain death, what's so brave about it?)
2. She can speak Klingon really well (when it amounts to what exactly given that they don't seem to care and it actually reinforces Marcus' point about war)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)Who says that Uhura is not trained, anyway? I think they all are to some degree. Who would have these people on a spaceship without any kind of training? You must be like those who decide to study psychology and complain they have to study math and a second language too.
What was Mccoy doing with Kirk at the beginning when they ran from the natives? Why didn't Kirk take a security officer with him? Actually, I don't remember them ever saying that Kirk has any kind of security and hand to hand combatt training.
Here, rewrite the whole star trek franchise because according to you it must be all wrong and not 'realistic'.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)That's because Kirk is the captain and HE fucked up. So it's his JOB to go down. And given that he had Scotty -- the chief engineer with him -- a red shirt would not have done a lot of good.
The WHOLE POINT of that scene is that Kirk has to fix his fuck up and that he, as Captain, is RESPONSIBLE for his crew.
Remember that Italian captain that was reamed for abandoning the cruise ship? Yeah...It's the Captain's JOB to take care of this kind of stuff. To make the tough calls and sacrifices.
And the point I was making was that they never establish any kind of precedent for sending her. For example, it was at least MENTIONED that Chekov had been shadowing Scotty before taking over. They couldn't have done this with Uhura? Had a quick convo of her and Cupcake exchange two lines about her security training?
And do you know anything? You DON'T have to study a second language to study psychology. Have you even looked at the modern economy at all? It's based on SPECIALIZATION.
What was McCoy doing when they ran from the natives? Hell if I know. But given that he's the doctor, they might have felt it prudent to include him in case they encountered hostile natives (which they did).
