Unexpected fandom demographics

(Anonymous) 2015-04-06 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
If you created something, but it attracted the kind of fans you didn't expect, how would you feel?

E.g., significant overlap with a fandom for something jarringly different, older/younger fans than expected, fans into something else you really can't tolerate

the hipster microbrewery in my town that is popular with old people

Depends on who my intended audience was. If I made something for the 18-40 male demographic and it attracted women instead? I'd be fine with that. If I made a kid's something, however, and it attracted adults? I might feel creeped out, or possibly just bemoan my inability to understand kids.

Honestly, I'd probably do my best to ignore the fandom simply because I've noticed that fandoms tend to get very...Demanding, for lack of a better word, with creators who really take notice of them.

I'm always surprised by how many guys like my fanworks, especially given they're almost invariably (admittedly action-centric) slash. I'm perfectly okay with it, though. If anything it's made me question my own biases about straight men; i.e. that they'll shy away from anything with the icky gay.

But I've heard the same things from other slash writers who writer for largely male-dominated fandoms. If it's action-heavy, you'll get some (openly) straight guys reading it even if there's straight up dude on dude fucking in it. Especially if it's gun-wanky.

I'd probably just be first and foremost happy that I had fans at all.

But if I were to be annoyed, I think what would make me cringe the most is if I created something that was meant to be serious adult fiction, and it ended up being marketed as young adult fiction.

Yes, I know, YA doesn't necessarily mean anything, but I would kind of feel like it meant my stuff wasn't serious or mature, or developed enough.

Given it was a show for middle aged male racists, I'm shocked at how many pre-teen girls watched Top Gear. I mean, I'm basing that more on the reaction to Clarkson being fired, where the general response of teary death threats seemed almost exactly to match the same response from preteen girls to a Boyband splitting up, although I am confused as to why those preteen girls had profile pictures of middleaged white men.
