That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying, a writer can write a character having a trait, without even knowing about that traits existence.
Like, if someone was raised in a super isolated environment where they were surrounded by heterosexuals and were never shown any existence of homosexuality at all, they could still go "Huh. What if two men got together and had sexual gratification?". They might not know that they were writing gay characters, because they don't know about homosexuality, but those characters could be gay.
