Re: Anyone have any non-fandom confessions?

I assume you're very ethnocentric if you look down on adults who live with their parents. This idea that you need to take off the second you turn 18 is a western middle-class concept that didn't exist in a lot of cultures before the 20th century. In my culture people are expected to live with their parents until they get married (which is basically forever if you have no intention of ever getting married).

I don't think people are ethnocentric so much as cynical - and hypocritical, considering the same ones usually also complain about people who take money from the government. Well... for some adults, it really is one or the other.

OK but I don't think western middle-class adults who live with their parents do it because they're more enlightened about cultural norms outside of their own.

and in my culture they DO move out at 18. Does that make you ethnocentric?

What is your culture?

Re: Anyone have any non-fandom confessions?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-06 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
American culture of the last 40 or so years. (Post baby boomer, when kids started getting out young and making a life for themselves)

Shh, this is F!S, where American isn't a culture and you can only be "centric" in an American direction. Anyone who isn't American being centric to their culture is just fighting the US-centricness.

DA

I don't know what American culture you're referring to but it's not ours any more

http://www.pewsocialtrends.org/2013/08/01/a-rising-share-of-young-adults-live-in-their-parents-home/

Literally more than half (56%) of people aged 18-24 are still living with parents

Ugh, that's what I thought. I'm an American who lives with my parents.

And really, how was I supposed to have enough money to move out and live on my own at 18?

Magic high-school jobs and 1970's housing costs?

Re: Anyone have any non-fandom confessions?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-07 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
There was one anon here a little while ago who basically said you should move out no matter what at 18, even if you have no money and have to suffer for it, because they did.

Honestly, they came across like an idiot. They forced themselves to go through shit they didn't have to go through just to make themselves feel "adult" and now they're bitter and think everyone should have to do it.

Looks like someone's a bit prickly about this topic. Nowhere in my comment did I say that I judge people who do choose to move out when they turn 18.

But presumably anon's culture would indeed care about that if that's the norm.

You posted that you judge others who think people should move out at 18. (Ethnocentric was the specific word.) You point to your culture as reason for this.

I, in turn, point to my culture as to why I view those who DON'T move out at 18 as...ethnocentric?

Is that the word we're using here? You have culture, I have culture, anons have culture....it's just SO MUCH CULTURE out here.

But the comparison is not the same? OP isn't judging people who move out at 18, nor those who don't - but they do take issue with those who think it's the only acceptable or best scenario, and I rather agree.

Re: Anyone have any non-fandom confessions?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-07 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
They didn't say they find people ethnocentric for thinking people should move out at 18. They said they find people ethnocentric if they look down on people who don't move out at 18. Two very different things.

If you're looking down on people for having a different cultural practice than you, then yeah, you're being ethnocentric, and kind of a jerk. Anon is only being ethnocentric themselves if they look down on people who do move out at 18, and I didn't get the feeling that they do.

Re: Anyone have any non-fandom confessions?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-07 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno about ethnocentric, but I assume people who do this aren't especially practical, realistic or aware of how much things have changed in the past few decades.

It was hilarious, I had a teacher who went on a rant about people living with their parents past 18, and she asked the exchange students what they thought and they were horrified that she was saying that people should move out before they were financially able to. Coming from a teacher that loves getting on her high horse, it was rather amusing.
