Whump.

Trashy darkfic that's so OTT that the dark elements start seeming narmy.

Talk to me about these narmy darkfics! How dark does something get before you start to laugh in disbelief? It's such a fine line for me.

I can handle a lot so long as the writing is otherwise decent, and it depends on what kind of dark. If someone gets overzealous with gore or torture or something I can usually roll with it, but I'm less tolerant with those plots where a character's canonically loving and accepting family kicked him out (after savagely beating him) for being gay so now he's a homeless prostitute and on ten different kinds of recreational drugs and is HIV+ and constantly pees blood from the daily beatings he receives from his pimp (bonus points if his pimp is a crude racial stereotype), is ninety pounds underweight and also he's super depressed and self-harms and/or shoots up in symbolically grimy bathrooms.

Those elements can be just the right level of ridiculousness, of course, but when it's bad it's really bad.
