vague spoilers

I'm going to sound like a dumbass for saying this, but can someone explain to me what the actual murder mystery is? I watched the whole anime series and I still have no idea what the fuck happened. I tried to read a summary of the game but now I'm even more confused. I heard that it's a game where you have to solve a mystery, but every couple of episodes it's like they go back in time or some shit and different people survive and different people get killed. How is there one mystery if there's a different culprit each time? What's Battler trying to solve, exactly? He says there are no witches when a witch is sitting across from him, teleporting in and out from fuck-knows-where, and there are bunny demons that we actually see killing people. And different people get killed each time.

Spoiler warning!
Also the wikia answers all your questions better; sorry for my sleep-deprived response. Please take my "explanation" with lots of salt it's been a while since I played this and tbh a lot of concepts are difficult to translate. Just keep in mind that this is set in a time period where it's normal to get married and have children and that's the ultimate declaration of love -- to be robbed of that right leads to a lot of psychological trauma.

===
The issue is you think there's an overarching question, when the only overarching question is "why the hell is this happening?".

Battler originally wants to solve the murders. Then he wants to solve the murders so that none of his family members are implicated. But he refuses to believe in witches and insists it's the work of an unseen assailant. This is where the red/blue truths come into play. It becomes a game not about what actually happened, but what could have happened, within the constraints of the colored truths.

He plays so well that he beats Beatrice, but then the other witches decide to drag the game out and he realizes he misses Beatrice so he becomes gamemaster and tries to revive her. Cue the two Beatrices. Now he's batting for HER side (think Peter Pan and Tinkerbell -- witches are like fairies, believing in them gives them power) and the witches/other-people are on HIS old side (witches don't exist and these murders were caused by humans). Erica especially is intent on implicating a family member and insists magic doesn't exist.

Last arc features the grand reveal of why this is all happening and it's because Beatrice is the bastard child (presumably male) of father-daughter incest who is the spitting image of the patriarch's first love. His (?) genitals end up mutilated beyong repair, he splits himself into two genders, and tries to make Battler stay on the island indefinitely because his (?) female persona (the maid) fell in love with him so many years ago.

Aaand then you have the theories that Eva is Beatrice.

Thanks for replying! I kinda sorta understand a little better now, but I'm still shaky on the nature of "the game" or the "witches" in general. So if I understand this correctly, the bastard child (Yasu, I think?) is the mastermind behind the murders. Because of how crappily he was treated I can definitely see him wanting to get revenge on the family. Then how can he "be" Beatrice, who is a witch? Was this kid born with powers or something? And how does he look like Beatrice, who looks very different from Shannon/Kanon? Are these witches supposed to be some kind of thought projection or alter egos that live in another plane of existence or something? Also, I know that Shannon and Kanon are both supposed to be Yasu, but you see the two of them in scenes together. How the fuck is that possible? Does he physically split himself up via magical shenanigans?

Massive spoiler:

It's possible because the real event is the one where Battler's parents are the culprits. Battler flees the island with Shannon on a boat but Shannon gets killed and Battler barely survives. He is later found with his memories lost (presumbly from trauma) and now writes the scenarios that are the whole games as he tries to piece together what the hell had happened on Rokkenjima.
See it as Battler trying to regain his memories; he's the one making the magic and all the impossible things happen.

Also, actually no one sees Shannon and Kanon together, and the servants (except Gouda) know that they are the same person, and they are in on Yasu's plan, i.e. they know she wants to bomb the place and kill everyone.
