I'm a special education major with a minor in social work. After graduation, I planned on volunteering with a program that sends teachers to developing countries to teach educators/schools how to create programs for specials needs students.

Someone on Tumblr said that was bad because I am white. So I automatically have a white savior complex. : /

That's ridiculous. You want to go help people who don't have the same resources they do in developed countries. That's not having a white savior complex, that's wanting to help people. White savior would be- well, shitty movies that you're not in.

Speaking as a Texan, you might want to rethink that. Most of don't complain - or are even against - bilingual education. Hell, the government is actually supporting spreading a program that teaches kids in both English and another language* with the end result is the kids being bilingual.

Pretty sure it's Arizona you're thinking of.

But, like, non-Hispanic white people have always been Spanish teachers. It's been America's default middle school/high school/college foreign language credit since forever.

Yeah, one of my (non-Hispanic white) Spanish teachers had been teaching since the 70's. I really have no idea how someone could think it's a new phenomenon.

As someone from California, and basically, as it seems anyone from the Western states or those with a larger Spanish-speaking population, or hell, being an American in general, why the fuck would you not learn Spanish?

No, I still plan on doing so. But it sucks to have someone (that you think is a cool person), tells you that volunteering is bad because black kids should not have only a white person as their role model. This is ignoring the fact that I'd be working with local teachers and I assume that children in other countries have other role models.

Seriously, the whole idea is inane. Whiteness is a learned social construct, and defined differently in different countries.

When you get to a poor country, you're going to be a foreigner from a rich country, and "white" merely your complexion. All this racial consciousness stuff you were taught in the USA will be just a hangup from your old culture. Toss it. It's not real.

As someone who lives in a developing/third-world country: I, for one, welcome our new white overlords.

Honestly don't pay them mind, OP. They are not the ones who need that sort of thing, my country does.

Sometimes, when they throw around the world privilege I just roll my eyes and laugh because damn, you really gotta be a privileged brat to be throwing that word around. They do need to get educated on what being privileged means.
