Rolling Stones Rape case that turned out to be a Fabrication

(Anonymous) 2015-04-07 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I do think Rolling Stone needs to look inward at how this kind of shit show can be avoided but honestly, I think feminism also has to look inward and maybe realise that part of the problem is that what Erdely did is really the textbook way that feminism and rape victim advocates want rape victims to be treated. Just look at the shitshow and aggressive responses that a lot of people have directed at anyone who questioned Jackie’s story even before we found out she was a pathological liar and probably made the whole thing up. People kept attacking anyone who questioned her story as rape apologists and how expecting Jackie to remember details like when and where her alleged rape took place was revictimising and how it’s normal for rape victims not to remember such facts. But this girl didn’t just not remember, she made shit up to fill in the alleged blanks in her memory.

So yeah, i agree this is a very important case study and Rolling Stone and the media in general need to learn from it, UVA and other universities need to learn from it, but quite frankly so does feminism because keeping up this pretense that any questioning of a victim’s story automatically means one is a rape apologist is counter-productive and will only lead to making life more difficult for real rape victims. Let’s face it, seeking justice for a rape is a difficult and challenging process, and it will involve having to relive and re-tell the experience, and it will involve the victim’s testimony being corroborated and verified and inconsistencies will have to be explained, just like it’s the case for any investigation into any sort of crime.

As for Jackie, I hope she really is mentally ill and that’s why she’s a pathological liar because the alternative is too shitty to contemplate. Because I also don’t agree with how people seem to be coddling her and take offense when anyone blames her for her part in this shitshow. Because this is a woman who sent text messages to her friends pretending to be the guy who allegedly had a crush on her. She invented people. So like I said, unless she really is very mentally ill, I don’t have a problem with her getting part of the blame here and I don’t understand why some people have such a vested interest in protecting her. She did a huge disservice to women everywhere.

She wanted attention, and there's no bigger place to attention whore than social justice spaces. It's disgusting, and she's pretty much given the people who think most rape cases as lies made up by women to terrorize men a holiday, because now they have "proof".

People need to be held accountable for their actions, and the whole "oppressed people can never lie/cheat/steal/murder/do anything bad!" mentality needs to stop, because it's an extremely negative and destructive way to look at thing.

Oh please. Being afraid of being called a rape apologist doesn't preclude one from not having to check facts when doing journalism. Are you the piss poor journalist who has doing the story?
By the ways, real life isn't tumblr - rape victims are often scared to come forward because they won't be taken seriously, or will be blamed etc.

...evidently the lady in this story wasn't scared to. So don't act like that's an off-switch for the valid points AYRT made. The women I've known who've made false accusations weren't scared to come forward either; they came forward just far enough to get the attention and sympathy they wanted from their social circle, or to harm a guy's reputation that they were mad at, but not far enough that they'd have to make a police report and involve questions of evidence and credibility.

You can't just keep pretending this doesn't happen.
