But it makes sense. If an author doesn't put something in a work, it's not part of the work. Maybe it's something that informs the work, but is it really canon? I don't think it is, and I don't think that's a disrespectful thing. It's just saying that we can't be in the author's head, and that portrayal matters as much as, if not more than, intent.

That's where I disagree - sometimes intent does matter. Of course, if being ace or not was a central part of Sherlock's character, and Moffat never made that clear on the screen, he'd be doing a very poor job (I think though from what I've gathered that his sexuality is not a central part of his character)
