It feels disrespectful to me because it ignores the author's intentions regarding their own characters. Again, headcanon all you want, that doesn't matter, but stating that the author is objectively wrong about the decisions they've made for their character is disrespectful. I have plenty of headcanons that go against canon, but I don't try to make other people believe they are ~actually canon~ by arguing about how the source material presents itself, if the source OR the author clearly states a thing is true.

This is old (I'm catching up after missing a few days) but I completely disagree with this. I don't see what's disrespectful about thinking that what an author intended isn't what actually came across on the page/screen.

I don't understand the need to control how people respond to a work in general though. Once I create something and put it out there, everyone is free to think whatever they want about it and the characters and everything, no matter how much I disagree with them. It's not disrespectful to see things differently than I did.

Well, again, that's what headcanons are for. I have a ton of them. Some of them disagree with canon quite blatantly. What I have a problem with are people actually saying to authors or other creators of works, "you are wrong". Because by definition they are the one who created the characters and decide what canon is for them. Other interpretations are perfectly fine but it doesn't mean they are right and the original creator is now wrong. That's the sort of thing I'm talking about.
