It hits close to home for me too. My family was poor growing up and made similar bad choices just like they do. I find it funny because it's so relatable. Much better than Modern Family where everyone drives new cars and has new homes and lives the typical well off California lifestyle you see so much on TV.

I have no comment except to question if that little boy is supposed to look like an alien.

Very classy. It's just his face. And he's a kid.

It's been a while since I've seen a kid. Do they all look like aliens nowadays?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-07 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I am giving them the benefit of the doubt and so should you that they didn't mean to sounds hurtful.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-07 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
What is the nonhurtful way to say "you look weird"?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-07 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
He has a disease, Osteogenesis imperfecta type IV. It makes him have fragile bones and explains why he looks like that.

Holy shit. Really?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-07 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes and it also makes him smaller than "normal" for his age. He is 16 irl but plays a kid 13 or so on the show.

Yes, HDU not know the name and symptoms of every symdrome/disease/disorder on the planet. Bad. Bad Iceyred.

Flog me with a wet noodle.

This is why I said "I am giving them the benefit of the doubt and so should you that they didn't mean to sounds hurtful." And shared information about his condition. I am disabled and I don't expect everyone to know what's wrong with me just by sight. I also like to give people the benefit of the doubt when it comes to them being uneducated vs hurtful.

I was teasing Icey for feeling bad, not you for giving info. Sorry, anon, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings

(Anonymous) 2015-04-07 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. He also has a hard time getting around, sometimes. Some of the time he's fine, but other times he's got a definite limp or the filming is very conspicuously not having him move around much.

That's one of the non-story reasons I'll always love The Middle. It's not like there's a shortage of kid actors, but they specifically saw beyond his disability to choose this one. Plus he has a great name. Atticus Shaffer. You should look him up now though. He looks less "alien," though it's getting a little harder to buy him a tween/young teen.

Text: This show hits too close to home to find it funny. I actually find it depressing.
