Thing is, though, that you shouldn't NEED to hear the commentary to make things like that clear. If it's not in the show proper then it's a fuckup on the writers' parts.

Plus, Mako was treating Asami HORRIBLY even before then.

I get that, post-character development, that someone MIGHT like Mako and Korra together. But as an extension of how their relationship was written in season 1…I'm just like "WTF dude"?

I still say, though, that Season 1 Makorra is objectively horribly written though because you shouldn't have to listen to the commentary to clarify their relationship status.

DA

When they said their goodbyes, Asami kissed him on the cheek. That was, I felt, the biggest indicator that they were through. Considering that Mako was going on a mission he might not be coming back from, I figured that if they were still together (or if Asami thought they were still together), she would have given him a full-on snog.

That's not to say I thought it was well written, but I thought it was pretty clear without outright saying it.

I still think that's awfully vague though and it in no way compensates for how poorly Mako was treating Asami before.

Everything about the way he was behaving just sets my teeth on edge.
