(Anonymous) 2015-04-08 10:11 am (UTC)(link)Why should a non shipper even care about people liking the canon het couples? Why should they care enough to express their bitterness in a secret and make long comments about why a couple sucks and fans shouldn't like it?
When I read people saying things like 'I don't get why oeople ship this' the subtext is always 'i don't get why people ship this, INSTEAD of my ship that - imo - is much better'
With spock/uhura, it's popular but not in a way that you can't be a non shipper and partecipate in the fandom without people trying to convert you on that ship (it's another ship in that fandom that is like that) if you don't care about shippers you won't really have a problem with those fans and the romantic subplot is so subtle and takes so little screentime anyway that someone who doesn't like them could ignore it if they wanted.
As for the reasons why people like them, they are not so hard to imagine. When the first movie came out there was a whole magazine spread about spock/uhura (including an issue of the star trek magazine that put them in the best star trek romances list) critics loved it, in fanboards like trekbbs most found it interesting and wanted it to continue...which surprised me a lot because most of the posters in that board are die hard trek fans and the majority are males so I expected them to dislike the romance ad honirem because that fandom is so defensive about Spock and the holy trinity (kirk-spock-bones) but they didn't. To this day, many think it's one of the things the reboot did well and improved from the original series. There were hints in the series, comfirmed by Nichols, that make it seems pairing them together might have been the original plan but they had to give up because the time was too racist.
Then there are poc who think s/u is representation because it's a rare example of mutual loving interracial couple with a black woman. Allegorically, Spock himself was a poc and had a bit the role of sassy best friend of white protagonist that the reboot kind of challenged and destroyed making it so he's the one who has the romnance instead of giving it to Kirk like it would have been in the old movies.
It seems disproportionate, and at time suspectful, that of all the mediocre het ships you have in hollywood, some people get so passionate in their hatred for this one.
Dislike is one thing but getting to the point that you can't even accept people liking it?
