Late, but, my ex used to have a "rule" about paying for dinner, period. I had to kick them under the table for trying to tell the friend that I knew made over $500k that we'd cover dinner. I then instituted the general rule of: Whoever is least broke at the time pays. Most of the time, that was us. Not always. Even though my ex makes really good money (not $100k but not too far off) there's the fact that a good portion went to medical because although our scripts were covered, when you have two people on a dozen or so each, it adds up; but, our doctors weren't covered, and so that meant about $800 every 3mo for specialists to prescribe the medication that allowed us to function. Add in general unexpected emergencies like kitty surgery and dental work (shit man, even with insurance, dental work is RIDIC expensive)... sometimes that meant the person who technically made less paid.

It works out, IMO, because there's give-and-take. It's not something that would work for everyone, for sure; for instance, I have friends who don't have health issues that make major bank and they would basically NEVER be in the position of not having (more than enough) money. But in general, it's worked out fairly well.

Yeah, we're stubborn and prefer to pay for our own food whenever possible. Law Friend is pretty much the only person who can argue us out of this on a regular basis. Not to disrespect the generosity of our friends, I appreciate their caring and understanding of our finances, I just get really anxious when other people buy me things.
