Seriously, what did he do?

He used to be an alternative comedian (or at least that was the persona he adopted during the Thatcher era to get successful) that railed against the establishment. Then he wrote some books, grew old, got some money, and now he is just another middle aged rich guy who is happy with the status quo. That is literally all he did.

How much did Elton actually stand for? I know he claimed he was never "anti-establishment" in the first place.

No, he was never anti-establishment. But he built his career pretending he was, which is what I assume the OP disliked, and they're not the only one.

His name is kind of shit now.

I feel the same, OP.

I think he was just a dick all along and I was too young and impressionable to realise it. I got the first inkling when I read one of his books. He was given enough rope to hang himself in those.

For all those others wondering what he did, he cynically espoused beliefs he never really believed in so as to further his career. It may not sound much, but he fooled millions of people and it wasn't particularly nice.
