For some of us, canon shipping is part of the anticipation, the exploration of the universe. So it seems natural to ship things that are already there, or that we feel very well ARE there (though I agree "canon shipping" might not be the right term in those instances), and explore them.

(In OP's defense, I don't know about your fandoms, but in my there were a helluva lot of prickly canon shippers. But there were just as many prickly non-canon shippers, and most of us just wanted to write our fics in peace.)
