When TV shows try a new direction, do you generally like it or not? Give it a chance or drop it?

When you gave up on a series, what was it that made you quit?

What new direction have you approved of? Or, is there a TV show that defied your normal pattern?

For your current shows, what new direction would you approve of or fear they will do next season?

I really don't have an answer to any of these questions, except for second one. I watch a lot of case-of-the-week type shows and I usually quit series because they simply get boring, and I feel like they have explored all the possibilities, so the writers struggle to come up with new and interesting cases and usually go way way over the top.

On the other hand I quit Supernatural around season 5, because I found I didn't care at all about the whole massive plotline they were cooking. I mean, I'd imagine if they hadn't done that, if they had kept to the monster-of-the-week -type thing, the show wouldn't have gotten such an intense fanbase that keeps it afloat. But I would have preferred it.

I've heard that The Walking Dead The Arguing Living took a new direction after season 2, and it was a good direction!

Unfortunately I'm still too pissed off about having watched those first two seasons to want to pick it up again. Fool me once, show...

It really did, mostly because they got rid of the old show runner and picked up a new one. I still don't agree with some of the stuff they've done on the show with certain characters, but it's way better now than that snorefest season two was.

I generally dislike it - because I tend to get into shows or a reason, and it they change it too much hat reason is gone.

For me it's if I think they're trying to be ZOMG edgy, or if they're trying to pander to the masses. For instance, I always felt Ugly Betty went from satirizing pop culture and soap operas to embracing them. I didn't abandon the show, but it greatly irritated me.

I generally don't like change but I appreciate if a show can evolve naturally and still keep the spirit of the show.

I would say that POI has really impressed me. It took some big risks and really shook stuff up but there's still a core of saving/helping people. And yet, it's still very intriguing. I have no idea where they're going. The characters feel like they're in genuine jeopardy. I dislike the kind of situation they're in but the show has still managed to keep me hooked anyways. And, it doesn't feel like cheap drama (for the most part).

Kudos to them.

To date the only currently-airing TV series that I still haven't ragequit is Ripper Street, and if that takes some weird turn, I think I'll basically lose my faith in TV and stop watching anything ongoing.

I'm easy to anger, and I've found that very few series manage to take "a new direction" without completely screwing themselves up.

I just realized that a lot of the shows I watch that had a "new direction" took that direction before I started to watch it so I already knew about it.

Adding angels to SPN, already knew it and liked it.
Gideon and Elle leaving, already knew so it was not big deal.

The one thing I do mourn is that I REALLY liked season 1 of CSI NY where they were in this gritty crime lab with a lot of character. I really liked the aesthetic. But then they moved into just another shiny building like all the other CSI labs. Again, though, I knew it before I started watching.

I generally don't give a show a chance until I know it's not going to get cancelled.

I've said this here before but I quit CSI:NY when the serial killer fell off the lighthouse and didn't even get hurt and somehow managed to break into Danny and Lindsay's apartment and threaten their kid. Fucking silly.

I really hate what they did to Castle this season. I didn't mind them getting married but the execution was terrible and the roadblocks they threw at them professionally were annoying to watch.

Am I willing to stick with shows when they drastically change directions? I watched and enjoyed Lost from pilot to finale.

I don't really make decisions about shows that consciously

tbh i kind of float in and out of following even shows that I really, really love. or i'll marathon two and a half seasons on netflix and then another two seasons six months later. I don't have a great attention span with TV shows. Which I'm okay with.

Not with TV, but I've seen a few comics series do it, sometimes in a way that's totally awesome. Zot! comes to mind; it starts as a decent enough superhero kinda series, and then suddenly 180s to slice of life that is really enjoyable.

And Empowered has certainly changed over time, in a way I like way more.
