I think I have a limit. Generally I'll try anything with my favorite OTPs, especially when they're new.

But, having gone to Barduil lately, I realized there's a point where I just have to have something that's remotely in character or I just can't.

This is the second time I've heard Barduil mentioned in connection with OOC AUs. What are some good fics you would recommend for someone looking into the pairing?

In Hobbit fandom, my ship is Bagginshield, which is actually one that I can tolerate in most AUs because even in canon they're strangers at the start, so you can theoretically recreate their journey in a different setting.

I think if I could find a good fic to rec, I wouldn't keep harping on it.

I can think of good AUs for writers to write but no one's managed to pull it off so far.

However, there is a Barduil Big Bang going on so maybe something good will come from that.

Yea, this is me, but it really depends on the fandom too. There are certain fandoms where I need the characters to be IC and I don't care for AU's, and some where I don't mind a certain level of OOCness (or wild AU scenarios).

Of course I want IC fic, and I back-button out of a lot of stuff that I don't think feels 'true enough' to the source material, but depending on the fandom, you might not have a lot of choice. Sometimes I get so desperate to read a pairing that I'll put up with stuff that would normally turn me away.

But there isn't much characterisation in the movies for Barduil, which I do ship, but only because they're really pretty together...

Well, I am a book fan so I think I can be bothered by bad characterization.

(And believe me, what little there is in the movies is thrown out the window too.)
