I actually like the black Hermione fanon, but I think you're a fucking liar if you claim that you "always" read her as black. No you didn't. You're claiming ignorance of white as default (if a character's race isn't mentioned, it means they're white) and that doesn't make you sound progressive, just naive.

I think it depends? Like, I know that white is generally assumed as default but I usually just picture as a the person they remind me of most. And, as often as not, that person isn't white*.

That said, if they're claiming that "white is default"/"I didn't know white is default" then...yeah. No, that's bull.

*Actually, more often than not because I live/grew up in a neighborhood that's got almost no white people in it.

Yeah, and JKR did fall into the "white as default" POV herself, since when a character was black, she would mention it.

I like the fanon too. I've fallen into the default with her and stuck there now but I like the fanon art
