When I first found a Full House slash fanfic (Danny/Joey, I believe), I was so new to the concept of fanfiction, let alone slash, that I left a really mean review calling the person insensitive to homosexuals and all this other stuff. Because I was young, my wording was awkward and also made me look homophobic. I just couldn't imagine that someone would seriously think characters on a kid's TV show who were straight would suddenly be gay.

... it was years ago and I really wish I could apologize to that person. :(

Well, Full House is coming back with most of the cast. Maybe they'll make some new fanfiction and you'll stumble onto them again?

I did a similar thing when I was younger. I think a lot of fandom people did that at some point, actually. And to be fair, it IS really weird to suddenly find yourself in an environment that is so absolutely oversaturated with slash tropes, half of which trample all over one's suspension of disbelief.

That's not to say that your comment did not sound homophobic (it probably did) or that it wasn't a bad thing (it was). But if there's one common mistake fandom newbies commit (pretty much regardless of their RL views on LGBT+ issues), it's this.

AYRT - Yeah, I believe I wasn't sure if homosexuals was the right term, and said something like "homosexuals or whatever you call them." I totally didn't mean it as flippantly as I made it sound, but.. .yeah. Not cool.

I definitely think it's confusing when you first find it, especially if it is kid's stuff. I had the reverse where I was trying to explain Harry/Draco to people not at all familiar with fandom... it didn't do any good. At least I was interested enough in fandom that I got used to it, if never into it.

God, I remember when I first started reading HP fic, I flamed the hell out of a Draco/Hermione fic because I thought the pairing was terrible. I remember I told the person the pairing was garbage and I thought they were stupid for thinking Draco and Hermione could ever be a couple, etc., etc. At that time I think I was only reading Ron/Hermione and hadn't even discovered HP slash (which is important to note because my OTP ended up being Snarry... ironic, I know). I feel pretty bad about my troll-y flame review and wish I could go back and not be such a douche.
