Tough question.

I'd find it fascination to watch something grow with me and develop a personality - so that makes me want to say yes.

But the shutting down part? If it's even remotely sentient I'd find that incredibly creepy. To me that sort of sounds like getting a pet dog with the intention of putting it down five years later.

A lot of pet dogs die naturally after not much longer than ten years...

I thought that's the sort of thing this was about until I realized they meant a sapient/humanoid robot.

Well there's a difference if you're going to forcibly "kill" them or if thy "die" naturally. But I guess in the case of artificial intelligence is, it could be transferred if the body malfunctions?

No, not if it was sentient. I read a really depressing fic once that touched on sentient "robots". It upset me enough that I couldn't finish it.
