I'm the only the top part with this even when I'm in super-OTP mode. Canon divergence AU's or AU's that keep the relationship the same as it is in canon I'm good with, but if it's an AU that changes/removes that relationship then it wont hold my interest, I ship a pair because of the dynamic and changing that just makes them OC's who happen to share the names of canon characters to me.

Same for me. I've never managed to reach the stage where my brain turns off and I can read absolutely anything as long as there are characters with the OTP name hooking up.
If I want to read original fiction I'll go read original fiction... and I'm not lacking books which are better quality than the meet-cute AU melodramas with little plot that goes nowhere.
Maybe that's another reason I prefer canon-connected stories. Because canon has a plot, if the fanfic is linked to it it's guaranteed to have at least *some* by osmosis XD

Yes, there's tons and tons of books that are better, but most of them aren't nearly as good at being meet-cute AU melodramas. Which is sometimes just what I want. Sometimes I just like reading about characters I like being cute together. At great length, and in excruciating detail.

Yes, and that's why I left this comment on a thread with somebody who prefers the canon stuff.
I mean obviously there are tons of people who want meet-cute AUs. That's probably why there are TONS AND TONS of them. You're hardly lacking in reading material, you lucky duck.
I'm just one of those people who likes a lot of canon in my fanfic, because if I want to read about specific characters then I want to read about those specific characters. Not some other people with the same name who bear little resemblance.
This is regrettably kind of rare in my current fandoms, so I am frustrated.

Enjoy your mountains of meet-cute AUs.

Likewise.

Oh, sometimes there are exceptions that get past, like Modern reinterpretations of the canon plot, or a plot that isn't one of the usual transplant settings and has some plot quirk that draws the eye.

But I can't even look at most transplant-AUs, they usually remove all connection and relevance to the original material (especially in fantasy canons).
