It ended on a cliffhanger. They introduced a character who was sinister in more-than-human ways, had Joan ask God if this was the Devil (IIRC she didn't get a straight answer), God said her friends were the army she'd have to rely on...and that was the season finale, and it didn't get renewed.

Possibly for the best. The show was all about the average human characters, with God there mostly as a plot device to make things interesting. There's storytelling potential in switching it up and exploring the mythology, but you know they wouldn't have had the guts to really dive into it.

On one hand, yes it was a cliffhanger, but the other hand, it's on my list of shows that ended abruptly but right. With her friends bring into the fold, there was a sense of closure for that act of the story.

Also on that list are Journeyman and the episode of My Own Worst Enemy where Henry accepts that Edward and the company are a part of his life he had to deal with. (I don't know if that gets less good in the last episode or two, because thst was such a natural act break that it's just where it stupid for me.
