Analyzing media in a literate way.

Sometimes when I'm not among friends, I'll say something like "Sometimes Christopher Nolan reminds me of Rudyard Kipling: great stories, but enough imperialism already, am I right?" or "The neo-noir of the 90s was long enough ago that I think we should be hitting nostalgia recursion, aren't we due for neo-neo-noir?" and get these blank looks, and then everyone has to awkwardly change the subject.

People think I'm being pretentious, but I'm not pretending anything. That's just how I think about art: in context.

I kind of do that. Like the other day someone on F!S! was asking if they should watch House of Cards on Netflix. And I told them, if they liked Shakespeare, yes. Because that show is the best non-adaptation of Macbeth I have ever seen.

And I was trying to explain how Gotham isn't just a cape show but a crime noir show. Something that is rare on television these days.

I don't think what you do is that rare.

I think that's cool, but I do that too. I was surprised how few people besides me notice stuff like the similarities between say, Pleasantville and the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, for example.
