Re: Racism in the classroom

The weirdest thing I read was from here:

http://www.examiner.com/article/professor-accused-of-racism-for-correcting-grammar-capitalization

What struck me was this part of what the professor said:

“Second," he added, "two weeks ago a Student of Color and a white female student got into a big discussion. She wants to use Standpoint Theory [a method of analysis coined by feminist sociologist Dorothy Smith, based on the idea that all knowledge is subjective and based on one's position in society] in her dissertation, and the Student of Color told her she had no business claiming that she was a member of an oppressed group. She came back saying there are all kinds of oppression. I likely did not handle the situation well, because I chose not to stop the discussion between them, so it went on for quite a while, and the Students of Color apparently interpreted my silence to mean I wasn't supporting them.”

I just don't understand this. The white female student is a woman is she not? How does she not qualify as a member of an oppressed group?

And Dorothy Smith was a white woman so it just seems odd to me that someone would have an issue with a white woman using a theory developed by another white woman.

What a weird case.

I'd be disappointed in an instructor that DID taste dudes in that argument.*

The above is what Swype thought "take sides" should be, and it amused me so much, I couldn't delete it.

Tasting dudes would indeed have been kinda weird at that point. :)

Unfortunately, that's not the first time I've seen that - the idea that white women are just as privileged as white men just because we're white. :/
