I know for me I've had so many friends on Facebook and twitter do that and it turns out they just broke a nail, so my immediate response is... pretty much all of this. But sometimes it IS bad, and like you said they just wanted to say something. So I hope Op is okay too.

I've seen it both ways, which is why I think you have to be careful about these kind of comments. Sometimes people overreact, but sometimes something massive has happened and they don't have the heart to talk about in detail, but need to say something (even if it isn't much).
