People hang onto BNF's not for their thrilling "experiences", whatever those may be. They hang onto BNFs because they want you to make shit for them.

That's it. That's all anyone wants from a BNF; more shit made for them, for free, 100% perfectly catered to their tastes, all the time. If you fail to provide this, then they'll crown someone else a BNF instead.

Yeah, I don't doubt that OP's friends are using them, but I do doubt that they're living vicariously through them. It's far more likely that they're just hoping to get free stuff and/or e-famous by proxy.
