Do it. That's why I started. A degree in Asian Studies later, I'm now fluent (passed the N1 years ago).

Even if you think it's a dumb reason, it opens new doors for you in other ways (meeting new people, travel, literature). And I still play Japanese games. (lots of BL games, frankly >w<)
