I do judge them a little because canon shippers tend to have a large number of fans from two groups -
Sore Winners
It Counts As Gen

Seriously, I hate the True Fan wank with a passion. You ship the canon pairs, awesome. That doesn't make you a better fan than people who ship other stuff.

And it's still shipping even if it's canon, don't label it Gen and then tell me if I'm a fan of a series I have to like it in canon so I shouldn't mind it being shoved into your fanwork without warning.

But... it kind of is gen.

I mean, maybe not for any series, and it's a matter of focus, but having, say, Jack make a comment to Ianto about playing naked hide-and-seek later or having whichever of the Buffy couples happen to be canon during the season where the fic is set making googly eyes at each other is part of what a fic will be replicating.

Now, if it turns into a full documentation of the aforementioned naked hide-and-seek, or if the story is about the canon pair, then it's a ship fic.

But writing the Torchwood Team or the Scoobies as a bunch of platonic co-workers would be getting them massively out-of-character.

Except people ignore canon stuff all the time?

I mean lets take Star Wars, I'm perfectly fine with all the Obi Wan/Anakin fics that just kind of go "Yeah, he never fell in love with Padme" In fact I tend to prefer it over "This is why Anakin/Padme didn't work out" being shoved in there. And I certainly don't want to click on a fic labeled Obi Wan/Anakin only to find it's a big breakup fic between the two guys with unlabeled Anakin/Padme being the end game because duuuuuh it's canon (gen!)

Especially when you get into multiple timelines and multiverse and whatnot. Like one fandom I'm in has a TV show set when the characters are teens and then a movie where they're adults. People will refuse to tag the canon movie pairs for the show-verse because they become canon eventually!

Or more recently where it was tagged just a M/M fic and the sex was between the two male characters, but all the romance was on the M/F couple because there were hints that they'd probably be a canon couple eventually.

Just tag all your damn pairings already.
