Dude I've been here for years, like three or four years. And I have no idea how people keep named users down, their particular fandoms and to the point where you'd know what kind of secret they might make. like, I don't know if I'm not paying enough attention, or some people are paying way too much attention..

IDK if you read a lot of fiction but I thought of this book (which I enjoyed) while reading your secret: Sweet Like Sugar by Wayne Hoffman The main character who's gay bonds with a rabbi (who's anti-gay) and they both learn stuff and it's very life affirming IMO. Also there's a romance. But the whole fetishistic view of Jewish gay men made me think of one part of the book where the main character got totally grossed out by something a date said that ruined all future possibilities with that guy for him! Anyway, he was thinking some interesting thoughts about why it was so disturbing to him...when he almost always dated blond men!! He couldn't even remember the last Jewish guy he'd met, and kept wondering why he wasn't finding men who understood why his religion was important to him (while, yes, still being a modern gay man). Interesting and thought provoking. And romantic enough to hold my interest, too.

I can understand that. My longterm boyfriend started mentioning my 'color' recently, and how it was hot, and I've started to feel weirded out by it. Race has never been a thing between us, so it came out of nowhere and I know I shouldn't be bothered by it, because I'm white, but I don't know...I guess I just don't like how it makes me feel.

No. Some people think he's Jewish because of his name. The only confirmed Jewish character s far is Annie.

It's weirdly popular for characters' Jewishness to be fetishized in fanfic. Maybe because Jewish characters are "ethnic," but they look white and therefore are frequently slashed and shipped, unlike POCs? Whatever the reason, it's been going on a long time.

I remember some wank once about someone who had an idea for a fic/comic/whatever that involved Levi as a concentration camp prisoner and Eren as a liberating soldier. Because obviously angsty concentration camp sexy tiems is hot.

I was never very immersed in the fandom so I don't know if that idea ever saw the light of day, but given the backlash at the time I doubt it.

I feel like half the time when a character is headcanoned as Jewish it's all based off of stereotypes.

I've seen fandom say a character was "obviously coded as jewish" because they had a big nose and were a crook. Geez thanks.

I hate fandom headcanons.

(And yes, I’m aware that it’s nowhere near as bad as the way this and other fandoms fetishize queer people. I have a higher tolerance for creepy fetishization of my sexual orientation than I do for creepy fetishization of my ethnicity.)
