I wanted to like Wicked. So many people said great things about it, and I read it and absolutely hated it. The best thing I can say is that the cover art was pretty. Too many plot threads brought up and dropped (the animal/Animal thing went unresolved, even though it was an interesting philosophical discussion), and Elphaba was NEVER likeable as a character for me (I really don't condone cheating, ever, and that's a definite turnoff for any character or person for me, and combine that with her utter rejection of her son... that'll be a NOPE from me). I feel like it was billed as "how does a good person become evil?" when instead it was more like "unlikeable person does bad things, is a horrible person."

There's so much love for this book, and it's refreshing to know I'm not the only one who doesn't like it.

While I think in the musical version Elphaba was meant to be likeable but misunderstood (I'm not saying you're going by the musical, just an observation), I didn't get the impression from the book. I think she was supposed to be more understandable with more admirable motivations, but screwed up a lot in the process.

Oh God, I haaaaaaaaaated Wicked. HATED it. I really, really wanted to like it--I am a huge, ginormous fan of the original L. Frank Baum series--I've read them all and own all but two of them. Baum's imagination was off the charts awesome. He needed to work on his continuity but his wit, cleverness and sheer kaleidoscopic imagination were amazing. So I love the books and I should love Wicked, right? Great idea, great setup--Oz reimagined as this dark political world, this carnival mirror to the Oz we know. Fucking HATED it. Yes, the concept is good but the execution is terrible. Elphaba was so so SO SO passive. Lots of feelings but no follow through. Just so plodding and slow and awful. The musical was frankly an improvement. I tried to read the sequel and ended up discarding it (which I never do).
