idk man, Oz seems like at this point it's essentially got fairy tale status. I know it is a story that's not actually that relatively old, with an author, and so on. But I think that's how fans and the media treat it, so loose interpretations and reworkings are pretty much norm. I'm not sure I'd call it fanfic, unless me writing a reworking of any fairy tale is the same genre as what I think of as fanfic.

Anyway, no opinion on the book, but I like the Wicked musical, as overrated as it is. I thought the friendship story was really sweet and moving.

That's only because there has never really been a faithful adaptions. The original movie is what everyone sees as canon has surpassed the books in the minds of most. That doesn't make Oz fairy tales though. Fairy tales were not written by one person. They are folk tales passed down and changed. Oz was written by one person, and just because it is in the public domain now and everyone wants to make their own version of it doesn't mean it doesn't have actual canon that every single adaption has violated.

I don't think 'non meant it literally anyway, but I'd also like to point out that fairy tales may have had one original author. L. Frank Baum is the original author. (And who knows, the original books may have been inspired by other works themselves.)

I do know what a fairy tale is (though as other anon wrote, some fairy tales we do know the author). I mean it has fairy tale status. It has that common domain feel - I'd say the same about Alice in Wonderland.

FWIW, I knew what you meant.

Just to contradict slightly -- Marvel's recent comics adaptation of the first five books (Eric Shanower/Skottie Young) don't violate canon at all that I can recall.

My two favorite adaptations are the 80s Japanese television show that was dubbed and aired on HBO in the early 90s and the Marvel comic series. I'm so upset they won't continue the comic series and finish the original books.

Fairy tales were not written by one person.

Hans Christian Andersen would like a word with you.

Pretty sure he wasn't actually the source of the fairy tales. He just wrote down one version of stories that had already been local tales.

Andersen's first booklet of stories was based on local folktales, yes. However, in subsequent booklets he included tales he himself had created. (Wullschlager, Jackie. Hans Christian Andersen: The Life of a Storyteller. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2002)

Andersen did adapt a few existing tales (The Princess and the Pea and the Emperor's New Clothes being big ones), but most of his output (most famously The Little Mermaid) was original.

Dude, you do know Hans Christian Anderson based all his fairy tales on children's stories that he heard as a kid?

The original movie

Is 15 minutes long, silent, and almost never seen.

The MGM movie is the 8th Oz movie that I know of having been completed.
