I don't have a problem with people asking for help if they need it, IRL situations that everyone deals with is a little weird but hey, it's not like anyone is forcing anyone to donate. It's up to each individual to decide if it's a worthy cause or not. And the economy is fucking rough on anyone who isn't super rich so we all need help some times.

I only find it weird if someone has other resources they can rely on. Like I had a friend set up a gofundme and I just wondered why she didn't ask her parents. Her parents are well off, she has a good relationship with them, why should all her poor friends help her when she has that going for her?
