Re: Lovecraft recommendations
As a side note, several of the short stories in the LF universe are available online, so you can try it for free before you get invested? "Equoid" is probably the best, quality-wise, and I don't think it relies too much on knowing who the hell these people are, but it comes smack in the middle of the series as it is so YMMV.
"A Colder War" is completely a stand-alone, and it is VERY good if you have any interest in cold-war era political fiction (with supporting Lovecraft elements)
