Speaking of Harry and Hermione, my teenage mind always viewed them as really good friends. There was never a point I thought they'd be a couple. I was not involved in fandom when I was reading the books, so when I started hearing about ship wars and that so many people thought they'd end up together I was baffled.

Harry and Hermione have one of those rare precious friendships in books/tv/movies of a main male and female protagonist that don't ever have a romance between them. It was refreshing. I think a lot of people thought they'd end up together purely because of that.

The scene that always stands out in my mind when I think of their relationship is when Ron wasn't with them and they were visiting James and Lily's grave.

BESIDES THE POINT. I was always cheering for Ron and Hermione to end up together. It became obvious by the 3rd book that there would be some romance between them and only became more obvious with each following book.

Yeah the idea that they'd become a couple never crossed my mind while reading the books (before I delved into fandom, at least). I didn't really think about relationships for the first couple of books, but by the third the RHr aim became clear. It was probably a good several months after the fourth book came out that I even peeked into the fandom, and I was surprised.

I was always confused as to how people thought Rowling was deceiving them? After book six people said they'd been lied to, but aside from what was in the actual books, Rowling had outright said it's not Harry and Hermione as far back as GoF in interviews, and I know the diehard fans followed said interviews. She never misled.
