Is this a real fairytale?

[personal profile] loracarol 2015-04-12 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I was reading a book, and the book made mention of the sun captured in a dark cave, and the four winds "bound in chains", and for some reason, that plot reminds me of something, so:

Is there a real myth/fairy tale somewhere with that premise? I tried googling it, but I just kept coming up against "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms", and that just doesn't seem right. :/

Hmm, in Japanese myth, Amaterasu the sun deity hides away in a cave. Sun god/dess in a cave certainly seems like an existing folkloric image anyway.

That part is familiar, but I don't recall any winds being bound in the cave with her? And that was a big part of the fairy tale in the book I was reading. ^^;

It isn't exact, but that reminds me a lot of various Slavic myths? Perun the thunder god once freed the sun and the rains from imprisonment, I think, the sun from a cave and the rains from a castle. There are several national variations on the theme.

Ooh, I'll look into those, thank you!

Yes, there are actually several with the general "trapped winds [usually for the hero's use], and hero needs to get something important" themes. Off the top of my head, there's a Greek myth [thus probably a roman one] with that type of idea and some kind of Native American one, I think? I can't remember which nation specifically, sorry, but for some reason I'm remembering something about that.

Thing is, in myths the wind is usually trapped in a jar for the hero to use to get to where ever their going [sometimes to get the sun, other times it's something else.]

I know that the winds was a thing in The Odyssey, but they weren't personified, I don't think? Whereas these were personified. But I'll look into those, thanks!

I think the Greek myth you're thinking of is Aeolus.

It's a Finnish myth. It was depicted very badly in the movie "The Day the Earth Froze" which most people only know because it was on MST3K.

That would make sense, given the book I was reading, thank you! And some of the names are the same, so it's definitely that!
