I've always loved the impression I got from Deputy Chief Johnson that dressing that way and leaning into her southern drawl was her using her femininity to telegraph strength. ~Yeah, not only do I run with the boys but I do it on my own terms and not by their rules~ I could be reading into it but it has always felt like it is a nice rebuttal to the "one of the guys" method of establish a Strong Female Character(tm).

YES, exactly. She *was* a Southern woman, she had her 'little ways'. She didn't talk about sex or personal stuff, she was always super-polite (to the point of being utterly cutting and snarky) and it *worked*.

She put people off their guard and off balance and she showed them a fluttery, flowery, pink-trench-coated outside and an inside like a steel trap.

And she didn't do it with a sneer toward her femininity, like 'ha, you fell for the fake helpless crap!' She *liked* dressing up and looking nice and didn't mind when someone took notice in a respectful way. It was a part of her identity and she wasn't ashamed of it, but she wasn't above using it, either.

Yes! It was presented as just another tool in her arsenal. Overall she was a women who was strong in additon to and BECAUSE she was feminine and not someone who was strong in spite of her femininity because she adopted masculine ideals.

We do need more of that and depictions of women who are fierce, non-judgemental, supportive friends.

Yes. I really do get tired of women being 'rivals'. It's not only 90 percent male-driven wish fulfillment, it's frigging boring.
