to be fair, Ursula in the Disney classic is fat...so I can understand this complaint. It's an issue of accuracy.

yeah... OP isn't making something up to complain about. OP is just expressing that while it is nice to see progress in one aspect it is also kind of disheartening to compare it to a lack of progress in another apect.

They could at least have tapped CC Pounder for the role. Of course, I'm upset that she isn't getting tapped to play The Wall in the live-action DC movieverse (thanks for nothing DC).

Or S. Epatha Merkerson.

Yeah, I thought the OP wasn't going for "She should be black AND fat for representation!" but rather "It's nice that she's black, but couldn't she also be fat the way Ursula is supposed to be?"

Weight accuracy, but not colour accuracy? Don't get me wrong, it's fine with me if they have anyone of any race playing Ursula, the more the merrier, but why then are we getting fixated on her waistline? It's not like it was an important plot point, in which case then okay, I can see where it might be an issue.

I assume the color thing was more of a representation thing? Unless Ursula was supposed to be coded as black but as to that I really have no idea. Obviously there aren't really any purple people.

LOL, I never realized she was purple, I always thought she was a grayish pasty color. No idea what she was coded, or if she was coded. I'm thinking not. I just find it weird how sometimes it seems like some things about the characters are interchangeable and can be mixed up, and then it seems like some things aren't supposed to be changed, and I can never figure out why one can and one can't.

Like I said, I get it when it's a plot point, but then again, that didn't stop short Tom Cruise from playing canonically tall Reacher.

The inspiration for her character model was a white drag queen (Divine). Some people see her coding as black, but that's a matter of their particular lens and not the original intent.

Thanks for the info, anon! *looks up Divine* oh, damn, I can totally see it!

I actually think that seeing Ursula coded as black is kinda racist because she's only "coded" as black in the sense of acting like a very stereoytpical voodoo witch character(ESL, proper word is escaping me).
