Re: Meals with no meat

I see the suggestion to substitute mushrooms for meat a lot in vegetarian diets and have mixed feelings. On the one hand, consider that the FDA recommends 50g of protein daily in a 2000 calorie diet. One cup of sliced white button mushrooms contains 2.2g of protein. You do the math.

Secondly, mushroom grow kits are a cute idea, but they're not practical unless you really, really want to grow them as a hobby and not as a food supply. Kits generally run $20+, not including shipping and handling. Then you'll have to baby them (no small feat if you don't have a knack for this sort of thing) and take your chances on how many you can harvest. Meanwhile, an 8oz. package of button mushrooms from say, Aldi, runs anywhere from .99 - $1.25. Sometimes cheaper if there's a sale. Unless you're growing the more high end ones that are harder to source fresh at a reasonable price, it will almost certainly not be worth it.

NAYRT

I don't think the idea of mushroom substitution is based around protein content, so much as the fact that mushrooms have a soft, chewy texture that's kind of similar to meat. Still, so long as OP is eating a balanced diet, they'll probably be fine for protein.

Yeah, the thing I see a lot of with people moving from a relatively high meat diet to a low meat diet is that they miss the texture. That no matter how much other stuff they eat, without the meat-texture of a meal, they do not feel full; they do not feel like they've actually had a meal. Mushrooms are an easy way of compensating for that loss of texture. That and nutloaf, for some reason. For a lot of people (and yes, I know #notallomnivores) they've been programmed to think that meat is the meal and veg is the side-dish. It is a hard thing to overcome.

Yes, I understand it's sometimes a texture thing, but the comment I replied to suggested the OP "make what you would normally make" and just substitute mushrooms for meat. That won't result in a balanced diet.

Do you have any Aldi stores near you? They can be good sources for cheap produce, though quality can vary.

Until this moment, I'd never heard of Aldi. We don't have 'em west of the Rockies, it seems! But Aldi Nord apparently owns Trader Joe's.
