I'd say it's kind of mediocre. Has some good stuff, a lot of bad stuff, but mostly bad in a fairly banal way. I think its reputation is kind of unfair.

Even if we're just talking about Gawker sites, io9 is pretty clearly way worse (not for political reasons, it's just poorly written shit, and it's astonishing to me that no one seems to mention this)

Well, they did post about how it was okay to abuse your boyfriend. And they said that guy who did that video proposal (one day for a year he took a pic with a board saying how much he meant to her) was obviously a psychopathic serial killer in training.

Yeah and those are fucking awful (and tbh I'd appreciate it if they retracted the abuse one, because that's certainly out of line)

They were using abuse ironically. Which I admit is very hipster and deserving of being called out in any case, but nothing they did counted as abuse, either legally or morally.

If that is your idea of red flags, you need to spend less time on Jezebel and Tumblr and start talking to real women.

I sometimes read the Gawker sites when I'm bored. Jezebel doesn't really stand out as particularly bad.

The order is pretty clearly Deadspin > Gawker > Kotaku > Jezebel > io9

I agree that I'd put io9 last. Somehow it's the one I read most and I'm not sure why :(

They do more (and more unapologetic) clickbait Pringles bullshit listicles than any of the other sites, and also are far more committed to nerd bullshit and the idea of nerds who identify as nerds and just pushing really, really hard and really unironically and un-self-awarely on that button in a way that I don't think any of the other sites really replicate. So those are things that can be kind of appealing, especially immediately, but they're also fucking terrible.

And, really, the whole reason that most of the Gawker sites are at all appealing is because they try not to do that stuff, and when they do, they're clearly aware that it's fucking terrible, and they also have an intelligent, critical point of view about the things that they're reporting on. io9 has none of that, it's just shitty writing and shitty journalism even from a web content providing point of view and I'm honestly disappointed in Gawker for allowing it to continue that way.

I'd be okay with it if it kept to reporting on science fiction and fantasy series, but it keeps trying to report on actual science, then falling for blatant quackery or badly mangling the results of studies.

I hate io9's science articles. I wish they'd just stick to other stuff.
I suppose every well-rounded nerd needs to read about science too, to keep up that nerd front (nevermind that the science content on io9 is laughably bad).

I read Kotaku, so I sometimes follow the links to the most popular Gawker articles. My brother is starting to wonder how I know so much about weird sexual fetishes.

I'm disappointed: that's not an article, it's an appeal for comments. I was expecting a top ten places to get laid!

I've noticed Buzzfeed doing that lately. Usually sometime after they write an article based on the comments. So maybe Jezebel will do that.

I can confirm that Jezebel, in fact, does this regularly. They have a whole weekly series where each week they ask a new question and then round up the best answers from the question the week before, which is really confusing and always reminds me of the pre-taped call in show from Mr Show
