What do you define as a hero then?

EMTs, at least, have a very stressful and dangerous job, and it's a job that's neither glamorous nor cushy. I'm pretty comfortable thinking of them as heroes. Being paid doesn't negate the shit they have to go through, or that there are far easier things they could do and get the same money. Making it all about the money just seems like another way to devalue the good work people do.

This. I question whether police are heroes as a whole (though individuals can be), but I absolutely believe that EMTs, doctors and nurses, and firefighters are.

EMTs I will give you but with people like doctors and nurses I worry about auto labeling them "heroes" because there are definitely shitty doctors and nurses out there who need to be held accountable.

EMTs are absolute Gs.

Can't imagine what it must be like to go to RTCs, GBHs, and people in serious medical distress every single day, and deal with the impact that's going to have your mental welfare long term.

And they're the best drinkers bar fucking none.

Nurses and Doctors though? The most judgemental people you can possibly meet (especially nurses), and depending upon the position they don't have the risk of the police, or deal with the same challenging situations.

Add CNAs to that list and I'm with you.

I never said anything about money. I said it was something they signed up for. I'm well aware that firefighters can be volunteers. I think they're admirable but not heroic.

I said it was something they signed up for.

But how does that negate someone's heroism? Because you know you're going to do something heroic, that at some point you're going to put your life on the line to save someone else's, it doesn't count? It has to be a spur-of-the-moment civilian rescue to be worth anything? I just don't see the reasoning behind that.

So? Why does them signing up for it mean they aren't heroic? What they do is heroic regardless of whether they knew what they were getting into or not. I also think that anyone who helps other people, particularly disadvantaged people, is heroic.

I would say just being willing to sign up for something that is potentially life threatening in order to save others puts them pretty far ahead on the heroics game.

I not going to be smug and think I'd ever be able to do what they do.

So, what, you can only be a hero if you do it spontaneously?
