I definitely know where you're coming from, as someone who can often get way too anxious about identity and people knowing information about me and stuff

My worry with something like that, I guess, is where does it end. Like, at some point, doesn't the mask account start getting too real? Do you have to just keep creating and discarding anonymous accounts?

I have like, four.

One is my primary, one was one I made to post some noncon BDSM, one for RPS, and one for a different fandom.

In my case, they're just fic accounts. I don't have tumblrs to match them or anything. It was interesting to see if something I wrote under a different name would be noticed/read/liked.

I have done this as well, with a similar breakout per sock (no RPS sock tho)

Yeah, I don't even know why I bothered with that, or the others. Most of my fic is filth.

That's really interesting.

I think, for me, it'd mostly just compound my worries, though.

Man, I've never been able to pull that off. We TRIED, for closeting reasons (we didn't exactly want our legal name to easily be googled to comics about mental illness) but it got increasingly difficult and awkward and eventually fell apart. And that was just a singlet facade, not a fandom one.

For a multiple, we are REALLY FUCKING BAD at maintaining multiple online activities. It's just too much to keep track of.

Sometimes I think about doing that, but, damn I'm also vain and would want the credit to my name.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. :D

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same. Especially if the fic under the new sock became popular, I'd want to go "it was me all along, mwahahaha!" which sort of defeats the purpose.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the reminder to stay vigilant on keeping my personae separate, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Misfire, sorry.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I did this too, when I didn't want my fics that contained smut or were a little dark to be associated with one name. Except now that I've got the second account and have started getting some notice for those stories...I have some bunnies that are quite depraved, and I'm not sure I want them under THIS ID, either.

But I'm also pretty sure I don't need three accounts for varying shades of fic.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I know that feeling.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
OP of #12 will find you out you know.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I've done the same.

Hey, whatever works. I can understand why a writer might feel like doing this.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I was really hoping this would be a Laurel and Hardy secret :(

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
They did share a bed in at least one of their movies....

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you're referring to Babes in Toyland: March of the Wooden Soldiers, because the title alone opens up so many Rule 34 possibilities...

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
If I ever finish some of my current WIPs, I plan on doing the same thing, OP.

Text: I felt too ashamed to post my latest fics under my usual AO3 username. So I sent an invitation to myself and created another account, and wow, was that liberating.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
I've seriously considered doing this -- I've written a few porny kinkmeme fills I'd like to archive, but I would feel seriously embarrassed to have them under my main online name. (I tend to present myself as pretty respectable and staid -- and then I go and write fics about frustrated masturbation or self-destructive mind control kink.)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
I've done this too, OP. Eventually you have to move on from that name as well and it all becomes a little inconvenient.

I'm not really posting anything that bad, either. But it's still worth it for the feeling of freedom.

Every time I write a new fic, I throw it under a random anon name - never to return*. I love it, I love seeing the type of reception an 'unknown' author can get and how it differs depending on fandom, pairing/no pairing, rating etc. Most importantly I love not being tied to the damn things.

*this is a lie. I did return to one to post a 'sequel'
