I dunno, how about because they're usually painfully boring, rote as fuck, and have very little to do with personality and chemistry and everything to do with checking a box?

And if love triangles are involved it's worse. Most of the time both men in the triangle are kind of awful choices, too.

It makes my skin crawl how there's seems to be the sentiment that "WE NEED A ROMANCE TO APPEAL TO WOMEN" and "MEN WANT TO SEE THE GUY GET THE GIRL."

And so what we end up with are a bunch of, as you say, painfully boring, rote romances that I can't get into.

Because what inevitably ends up happening is that the girlfriend is perfect. She'll be smart, funny, get a badass scene or two for "girl power." Because guys want to have the perfect girlfriend.

But I find it so alienating because I can't identify with these women AT ALL. It's clear they're just meant as a fantasy girlfriend. :/
