Good Reads/Ebook

So, what's your opinion?

And, what exactly is it? Is it just reviews of fanfic or is it the actual fanfic?

Can you clarify? Do you mean Goodreads the site, or the current mess with this Ebooks-Tree thing?

DA

...ebooks-tree thing?

There's a site that's scraping ebooks from various locations including AO3 and hiding everything behind a sketchy signup/paywall. Everything from Neil Gaiman to someone's half-finished kink fic's gotten picked up and they're charging fees to access all of it. AO3's already put in countermeasures and everyone is a bad DMCA lawyer right now.

It's happened before, but this is the current drama. I'm paying attention because one of mine got picked up in the scrape.

As a pro writer who's had dealings with sites like this in the past, chances are that all they have up are a list of titles.

Sites like that are nothing more than scams to fleece your CC details, and there's never any actual product to download even if you are naive enough to hand over your info. All you download is malware.

You're almost certainly right. They claim to have .pdf and mobi formats up for most documents, but since you need a log-in to know for certain... yeah, no. There's already been alerts about information theft about them as it is. Someone'll fry the place.

Their domain has already changed, and their home page now makes a point of stressing the "free, no hidden fees" thing.

(I had 8 fics swiped yesterday: as of today they're all gone, so I suspect the Ao3 tumblr form did its job on ebooks-tree and the CloudFlare server that was hosting them.)

The ebooks-tree thing I just tossed a reply on, but I can find some links on Tumblr if you need a little more.

Goodreads is mostly a review, recs, and information site. I don't *think* they cover fanfic? But you can get some excerpts and ebooks from them. It's a legitimate site that hosts a number of author events. The reviews can be all over the place, just like Amazon, but you can usually get an idea if a book's something you want. Also, someone's usually willing to spoil what happens, but they'll mark it before just dropping it on you.

Goodreads doesn't *officially* cover fanfic, but there was recently a brief uproar on tumblr about people making Goodreads pages for other people's fic.
